| 400 sq. ft. two-car driveway | $2,800–$5,200 | Compact double driveway |
| 600 sq. ft. two-car driveway | $4,200–$7,800 | Typical suburban driveway |

What goes into the estimate
- Area. Measure length × width in feet, including the apron and any parking pad. At $7–$13 per sq. ft. for a new driveway, every 100 sq. ft. adds about $700–$1,300.
- Thickness. Two inches of compacted asphalt is the minimum; 4–6 inches is recommended for durability and heavy vehicles. The heavy-duty option adds about 20% to reflect the extra asphalt tonnage.
- Base preparation. A crushed-stone base costs about $0.50–$1 per sq. ft.; the calculator adds 10% when a new base is needed. Soft soil or poor drainage can push base costs higher.
- Removal of the old surface. Removing an old driveway adds about $1–$2 per sq. ft., which is why replacement runs $8–$15 per sq. ft. The removal option adds 15%.
- Region. Paving prices vary by state and metro. The region selector applies a factor from 0.85 (lower-cost rural areas) to 1.35 (the most expensive metros).
How we built the ranges
Prices per sq. ft. by type of job come from Angi's asphalt driveway cost guide (updated April 2026): new standard asphalt $7–$13, recycled $6–$9, overlay $3–$7 and stamped or colored $10–$17. Base ($0.50–$1 per sq. ft.) and removal ($1–$2 per sq. ft.) costs are from Angi and Inch Calculator; slope regrading ($1,000–$6,000) and permit ($50–$200) figures are from LawnStarter (updated December 2025); and the first sealcoat ($200–$600) is from Forbes Home. The thickness (+20%), base (+10%), removal (+15%) and regional multipliers are WhatHomeCosts estimates that convert those per-sq.-ft. add-ons and LawnStarter's 2-inch vs. 4-inch tonnage data into percentages. Base prices checked October 2026.
The calculator does not include tree or stump removal, culverts or drainage systems, retaining walls, heated driveway systems or landscaping repairs. Asphalt prices track oil prices and can change between seasons, and small jobs may hit a contractor's minimum charge. Get at least three written quotes based on a site visit.
