Most homeowners pay $2,900–$7,800 for a stamped concrete patio, or about $9–$22 per sq. ft. installed, with a national average of roughly $5,300. Small patios can start around $1,200, and large custom designs can exceed $14,000 (Angi and Bob Vila data, as of October 2026).

Stamped concrete is poured concrete that's colored and pressed with textured mats while it's still wet, so it looks like brick, slate, flagstone or wood planks. It gives you a high-end look for less than natural stone, and it's poured as one slab, so there are no joints for weeds to grow through.
Below are typical costs by size and pattern, a line-item breakdown for a 400 sq. ft. patio, and the choices that raise or lower the bill. For a plain slab price, see our concrete patio cost guide.

Cost breakdown: materials, labor, permits and extras
Line-item estimate for a new 400 sq. ft. stamped concrete patio with one pattern, base color plus release color, and a first coat of sealer. Ranges are national, as of October 8, 2026.
| Cost item | Typical range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete, color and sealer (materials) | $1,600–$3,200 | Concrete, colorants, release agent and sealer at about $4–$8 per sq. ft. |
| Labor: pour, stamp and finish | $1,000–$3,000 | Forming, pouring, coloring, stamping and detailing |
| Sealer application | $40–$80 | First protective coat |
| Permits & inspections | $50–$300 | Where required by your city |
| Contingency (about 10%) | $250–$600 | Excavation surprises, extra base |
| Estimated total | $2,950–$7,200 | Before any discounts or rebates |
Stamping has to be done in a short window while the concrete is workable, so experienced crews charge more, and that labor premium is worth paying.
What affects the price
- Pattern. Simple patterns like brick or ashlar slate cost less (about $9–$11 per sq. ft.) than wood plank (about $16) or custom logos and inlays ($18–$22). Hand-tooled grout lines and borders add labor.
- Color. A single base color with one release color is the budget option. Two-tone patterns with borders run about $12–$18 per sq. ft., and multi-color designs $15–$20.
- Sealing. Stamped concrete should be resealed every 2–3 years to protect the color. Resealing costs about $200–$600 per visit.
- Area. A 100 sq. ft. patio runs about $900–$2,200, while a 1,000 sq. ft. patio runs $9,000–$22,000. Small patios cost more per sq. ft. because stamping mats and crew setup are a fixed cost.
- Site preparation. Removing an old slab adds about $2–$6 per sq. ft., and sloped or hard-to-reach sites need more excavation and base. If your existing slab is sound, a stamped overlay costs about $7–$12 per sq. ft. instead.
Ways to save
- Pick a standard stamp pattern and a single color; custom and multi-color designs can nearly double the price per sq. ft.
- Stamp only the high-visibility area, such as the border or the main seating zone, and use a broom finish elsewhere.
- Get bids from at least three contractors and ask to see stamped patios they poured several years ago.
- Clear the area or remove old pavers yourself if you can do it safely.
- Book the work in late fall or early spring, when contractors are less busy.
- Keep up with resealing; patching and resealing cost $300–$1,500, versus $4,500–$15,000 for a full replacement.
How to get an accurate quote
Ask at least three experienced decorative concrete contractors for written quotes. Give each the same details:
- The patio's dimensions and shape, and whether you're pouring new or overlaying an existing slab.
- The pattern and colors you want (bring photos), plus any borders, steps or inlays.
- Site photos showing slope, access and anything that has to be removed first.
- Ask what's included: excavation, base, reinforcement, the first seal coat, control joints, permits and the warranty on color and cracking.
FAQ
Is stamped concrete cheaper than pavers?
Not always. Bob Vila's comparison puts 200 sq. ft. at about $2,400–$3,600 for stamped concrete versus $2,200–$3,000 for basic pavers, so simple pavers can come in slightly lower. Our paver patio cost guide has full pricing.
How long does a stamped concrete patio last?
The slab itself can last decades like any concrete patio. The color and surface need resealing every 2–3 years to stay vibrant, and cracks or chips cost about $300–$1,000 to repair.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
The textured surface helps, but sealers can make it slick when wet. Ask your contractor to mix an anti-slip additive into the sealer, especially around pools and steps.
