Quick answer

Most homeowners pay $100–$600 for a one-time pest control treatment, with a single visit averaging about $170. Recurring service costs $40–$75 per monthly visit or $100–$300 per quarterly visit, which adds up to $300–$900 a year for most homes (Angi, HomeGuide and This Old House data, as of October 2026).

You'll need a pest control company when ants, roaches, spiders, rodents or other pests keep coming back despite good housekeeping, or when you live in a warm, humid area where year-round prevention is the norm. The price depends mostly on the pest, the size of the home and whether you pay for one visit or sign up for a recurring plan.

This guide covers average prices per visit and per year, costs by pest and home size, a line-item breakdown of a typical annual plan, and how to compare quotes. Specialty jobs cost much more than routine service: see our guides to termite treatment costs and bed bug treatment costs for those.

Cost breakdown: materials, labor, permits and extras

Line-item estimate for one year of quarterly general pest control (interior and exterior) for a 1,500–2,000 sq. ft. home. Ranges are national, as of October 8, 2026.

Cost itemTypical rangeWhat it covers
Initial treatment visit$150–$300Full inspection, interior and exterior treatment, sealing advice
Recurring service (3 quarterly visits)$300–$900Exterior perimeter treatment, interior on request; $100–$300 per visit
Inspection fee$0–$100Often waived when you sign up for a plan
Permits$0–$0No homeowner permit; licensing of the applicator is built into the price
Extra services or add-ons$0–$100Spot treatments outside the plan; re-treatments are usually free under the guarantee
Estimated total$450–$1,400Before any discounts or rebates

The first visit is the most expensive; after that, most of the yearly cost is the recurring visit fee, so the visit frequency matters more than any single charge.

What affects the price

  • Type of pest. Common insects such as ants and spiders cost $100–$500 to treat, while bed bugs ($1,000–$4,000) and termites ($225–$2,500, or $2,000–$8,000 for tenting) are priced as separate specialty services.
  • Property size. Bigger homes take more product and time: a one-time treatment runs about $250–$450 for 1,000 sq. ft. and $550–$900 for 4,000 sq. ft.
  • One-time or recurring plan. A one-time visit costs $100–$600, while a plan has a $150–$300 initial visit followed by cheaper recurring visits ($40–$75 monthly or $100–$300 quarterly).
  • Severity of the infestation. Mild problems usually cost $100–$500, moderate infestations $300–$700, and severe ones that need fumigation or many visits $1,000–$8,000.
  • Interior or exterior treatment. Most recurring plans focus on the exterior perimeter, where pests enter; interior treatment, attics, crawl spaces and wall voids add time and cost, and wall treatments can run into the thousands.
  • Guarantees. Plans usually include free re-treatment between scheduled visits if pests return, which is often worth more than a slightly cheaper one-time price. Ask how long the guarantee lasts and what pests it excludes.

Ways to save

  • Get at least three written quotes and compare the price per visit, the visit frequency and the initial fee, not just the monthly figure.
  • Choose quarterly service instead of monthly unless you have an active problem; a quarterly plan typically costs $300–$900 a year.
  • Ask whether the inspection fee ($125–$450 when charged) is waived if you sign up for treatment; many companies credit it.
  • Remove food, water and entry points before the first visit: seal gaps, fix leaks and store food in sealed containers, so fewer follow-up visits are needed.
  • Bundle services such as general pest and mosquito control with one company, and ask about prepay or annual-payment discounts.
  • Read the contract term and cancellation policy before signing, since some national companies bill the remainder of the contract if you cancel early.

How much does pest control cost?

A single treatment typically costs $100–$600, with the average appointment around $170. Specialty pests such as bed bugs and termites cost much more, from about $1,000 to $8,000 for severe cases.

How much should pest control cost?

For a typical home, a fair price is $150–$300 for the initial visit of a plan and $100–$300 per quarterly visit afterward. A quote far above $900 a year for routine prevention (no termites or bed bugs) deserves a second opinion.

What is the cost of pest control per year?

Most annual plans cost $300–$900 per year, including the initial service. Homes in warm, humid climates or with recurring problems sit toward the top of that range.

What does monthly pest control cost?

Monthly visits cost about $40–$75 each after an initial visit of $150–$300. That works out to roughly $600–$1,100 a year, so monthly service makes sense mainly for active infestations or high-pressure areas.

What is the cost for pest control for a one-time visit?

One-time service usually runs $100–$600, and up to about $900 for a full treatment of a 4,000 sq. ft. home. One-time visits cost more per visit than plan visits because they include a full inspection and heavier treatment.

How to get an accurate quote

Ask at least three licensed, insured pest control companies for written quotes after an on-site inspection. Give each one the same details:

  • The pest you've seen (photos help), where and when you see it, and how long the problem has lasted.
  • The size of your home in square feet, number of stories, and whether you have a basement, crawl space, attic or detached garage.
  • Whether you want a one-time treatment or a recurring plan, and how often (monthly, every other month or quarterly).
  • Ask what is included: interior vs. exterior treatment, which pests are covered, free re-treatments, the guarantee period, the contract length and any cancellation fee.

FAQ

Is pest control worth paying for every month?

Not usually for prevention alone. Quarterly service ($100–$300 per visit) is enough for most homes; monthly visits ($40–$75 each) make more sense during an active infestation or in high-pest areas.

Do I need to leave the house during treatment?

For routine perimeter and crack-and-crevice treatments, usually not, though technicians may ask you to keep kids and pets away from treated areas until they dry. Fumigation and some bed bug treatments require leaving for several hours or longer. Follow the instructions of your licensed applicator.

Who is allowed to apply pesticides?

Companies that apply pesticides for hire must use applicators certified or licensed under state rules, which follow federal EPA standards. Ask for the company's state license number and confirm it with your state's agriculture or pesticide regulatory agency.

Do pest control companies charge for inspections?

Many offer free inspections for general pest plans, but others charge about $125–$450, especially for specialty pests or real estate inspections. The fee is often credited if you buy treatment.

Safety noteTree work, pesticide application and heavy digging can be dangerous. Hire licensed, insured professionals and check local rules and permits. This page covers prices only.
