Retaining Wall Cost Calculator

This calculator estimates the cost of building a retaining wall from the material, height and length.

Multiply the wall's length by its height to get the wall face area, enter it below, then choose the material, height range and site conditions. This retaining wall cost estimator returns a price range based on published 2026 installed prices, not a quote.

The unit prices match our retaining wall cost guide, where most homeowners pay $3,500–$10,000 and most walls cost $20–$50 per sq. ft. of wall face. Planning a natural rock wall? See boulder retaining wall cost.

Typical results

For reference, these are typical retaining wall totals reported in 2026:

ScenarioTypical rangeNotes
Small garden wall, 20 ft × 2 ft$400–$2,400Timber, block or small boulders
Typical wall, 50 ft × 4 ft$3,500–$10,000Segmental block or poured concrete
Large wall, 100 ft × 6 ft$12,000–$36,000Engineered, with footings and reinforcement

What goes into the estimate

  • Wall material. Installed prices range from about $10–$20 per sq. ft. for vinyl to $20–$95 for natural stone and up to $150 for steel. Segmental block and poured concrete, the most common choices for mid-height walls, run about $15–$45.
  • Height and length. Enter the wall face area (length × height). Taller walls cost more per square foot because they need deeper bases, reinforcement and often engineering; the height multiplier (×1.1 for 3–4 ft, ×1.25 over 4 ft) is a WhatHomeCosts estimate.
  • Drainage. Every wall needs a way to relieve water pressure. Perforated pipe and gravel backfill cost about $10–$30 per linear foot; the add-on assumes about 50 ft of wall, so scale it for longer walls.
  • Soil and site access. HomeGuide reports that rocky or clay soil can raise labor by up to 50% and sloped sites can add 50% or more, so the hardest option uses ×1.5. Machine access matters too: hand-carrying block or stone into a backyard is slow.
  • Region. Labor and material prices vary by location. The calculator applies a factor from ×0.85 in lower-cost rural areas to ×1.35 in the most expensive metros.

How we built the ranges

Per-square-foot prices come from published 2026 data: LawnStarter (updated October 2026), HomeGuide's retaining wall, concrete and stone wall guides (December 2025–January 2026), Fixr and Angi's railroad tie wall guide (August 2026). Drainage, footing ($18–$55 per linear foot), engineering ($500–$2,000+), permit ($50–$450), demolition ($15–$30 per linear foot) and the $1,500–$3,000 contractor minimum are from HomeGuide. The height multipliers are WhatHomeCosts estimates; the soil and slope multipliers follow HomeGuide's reported 50% premiums.

The calculator does not include steps, lighting, fences, planters, tree removal, large-scale grading, retaining walls along shorelines, or repairs to an existing wall. Walls over about 4 ft or that support driveways or buildings need an engineered design, and real quotes depend on a site visit.

FAQ

How do I calculate the square footage of a retaining wall?

Multiply the wall's length by its exposed height. A 50-ft wall that is 4 ft tall has 200 sq. ft. of wall face. Some contractors also count the buried first course, which can add a little to the total.

Is the estimator result a quote?

No. It's a rough range to help you budget and compare bids. Get at least three written quotes from licensed contractors after a site visit.

Do I need an engineer for my retaining wall?

Usually for walls 4 ft or taller, or walls holding up a driveway, slope or structure. Check your local building department; many require a permit for walls over 3–4 ft.

Safety noteProblems with foundations, mold, sewer gas, septic systems, radon or asbestos can affect health and the structure of your home. This page covers prices only. Have a licensed professional assess the problem before any work. Retaining walls over about 4 ft tall, or supporting driveways, buildings or steep slopes, must be designed by a licensed engineer; a failing wall can collapse suddenly. Call 811 before any excavation.
