Walls & Drainage

Retaining Wall Cost

A retaining wall holds back soil on a slope or between two levels of a yard.

Quick answer
$3,500 – $10,000 total

Most homeowners pay $3,500–$10,000 for a retaining wall, with averages around $5,500–$6,300. Installed prices typically run $20–$50 per sq. ft. of wall face, from about $10–$35 for timber or interlocking block to $20–$95 for natural stone (LawnStarter, Fixr and HomeGuide data, as of October 2026).

Retaining walls hold back soil on a slope so you can create flat yard space, stop erosion, or protect a driveway or foundation. Short garden walls are a modest landscaping project, but walls over about 3–4 ft tall carry serious loads and usually need engineering, permits and proper drainage.

Cost breakdown: materials, labor, permits and extras

Line-item estimate for building a 50-ft-long, 4-ft-tall segmental concrete block retaining wall (200 sq. ft. of wall face) on a gentle slope. Ranges are national, as of October 8, 2026.

Cost itemTypical rangeWhat it covers
Materials (block, caps, gravel base, backfill)$1,500–$3,500Wall block, cap units, compacted base and drainage stone
Labor (excavation, base, setting block)$1,800–$4,500Labor is typically 40%–60% of the total
Drainage behind the wall$500–$1,500Perforated pipe and gravel backfill, about $10–$30 per linear foot
Permits and engineering$0–$700Permit $50–$450; engineering often required at 4 ft and taller
Contingency (about 10%)$300–$800Rock, roots, poor soil or extra excavation
Estimated total$4,100–$11,000Before any discounts or rebates

Height drives cost faster than length: taller walls need deeper bases, geogrid or rebar, footings and engineering.

What affects the price

  • Material (concrete block, poured concrete, stone, timber). Timber, vinyl and interlocking block are the cheapest at roughly $10–$35 per sq. ft.; poured concrete runs $20–$45, and natural stone or steel can exceed $90–$150 per sq. ft.
  • Height and length. Price is quoted per sq. ft. of wall face (length × height), but taller walls cost more per foot because they need deeper footings, reinforcement and more excavation. A 50-ft wall that costs $2,000–$6,000 at 2 ft tall can cost $6,000–$18,000 at 6 ft.
  • Drainage behind the wall. Every retaining wall needs drainage to relieve water pressure. Gravel backfill and a perforated drain pipe behind the wall add about $10–$30 per linear foot, and poor drainage is a common reason walls lean, bulge or fail.
  • Engineering and permit requirements. Many cities require a permit ($50–$450) for walls over 3–4 ft, and walls 4 ft or taller usually need a structural engineer ($500–$2,000+), as do walls holding up driveways or structures.
  • Soil conditions. Rocky or clay soil can raise labor by up to 50%, and steep slopes can add 50% or more. Poor soil may also require extra base material, footings ($18–$55 per linear foot) or geogrid.
  • Equipment access. Walls that a mini excavator and delivery truck can reach are cheaper. Hand-carrying block or stone into a backyard, or working around trees and fences, adds labor; excavator rental alone runs about $100–$300 per hour.

Ways to save

  • Keep walls under 3–4 ft where possible, or terrace a slope with two shorter walls, which may avoid engineering and permit costs (check local code).
  • Compare segmental block with poured concrete and natural stone for mid-height walls; block often comes in at the lower end of the per-square-foot range ($15–$35).
  • Don't skip drainage to save money: rebuilding a failed wall costs $35–$65 per sq. ft. plus demolition.
  • Ask about manufacturer-certified installers and compare block brands; Fixr reports installed prices ranging from about $10–$27 per sq. ft. for some brands to $25–$45 for others.
  • Get at least three written quotes that list wall dimensions, block or material, base depth, drainage, reinforcement, permits and cleanup.

How much does a retaining wall cost on average?

The average retaining wall costs about $5,500–$6,300, and most homeowners pay $3,500–$10,000. Small garden walls can cost under $1,500, while tall, long or stone walls can exceed $20,000.

What does a concrete retaining wall cost?

A poured concrete retaining wall typically costs $20–$45 per sq. ft. installed, or about $60–$270 per linear foot for walls 3–6 ft tall. HomeGuide puts the average 50-ft poured wall at about $6,500; concrete block walls run about $20–$35 per sq. ft.

What is the retaining wall cost per square foot?

Most walls cost $20–$50 per sq. ft. of wall face installed (LawnStarter reports an average of about $33). HomeGuide's broader average is $35–$65 per sq. ft., and premium stone or steel walls can top $90–$150.

How to get an accurate quote

Ask at least three licensed, insured landscape or hardscape contractors for written, itemized quotes. Give each the same information:

  • The wall's length and the height of soil it must hold back, plus photos of the slope.
  • What sits above the wall (lawn, patio, driveway, house) and any drainage problems you've seen.
  • Your preferred material and finish, and whether you want steps, caps, lighting or planters.
  • Ask what is included: excavation, base, drainage pipe and gravel, reinforcement, permits, engineering, soil haul-off and warranty.

FAQ

How long does a retaining wall last?

It depends on the material and drainage. Timber walls typically have the shortest life, block and poured concrete last much longer, and HomeGuide reports natural stone walls lasting 50–200 years when built well.

Do I need a permit to build a retaining wall?

Usually only for taller walls. Most cities require a permit for walls over about 3–4 ft, or for walls that support a driveway or structure. Permits typically cost $50–$450.

Can I build a retaining wall myself?

Low garden walls in interlocking block or timber are common DIY projects; LawnStarter estimates DIY costs of about $4–$20 per sq. ft. Walls over 3–4 ft, or on steep or wet sites, should be designed and built by professionals.

Safety noteProblems with foundations, mold, sewer gas, septic systems, radon or asbestos can affect health and the structure of your home. This page covers prices only. Have a licensed professional assess the problem before any work. Tall or failing retaining walls can collapse suddenly and damage property or injure people: walls over about 4 ft, or those supporting driveways, structures or steep slopes, should be designed by a licensed engineer.
